Simplifying the page[]

I think in the family section, the different entries for plural and singular family members should be merged.

For the food section, I think we should remove:

  • cake
  • muffin
  • egg
  • bacon
  • beef
  • chicken
  • hare
  • mutton

For the drink part, I think we should remove:

  • hot chocolate
  • fizzy drink
  • ale
  • goat's milk
  • mead
  • vodka

I think we should remove from the list of eating places:

  • a market street
  • an eatery
  • a vege shop

I think we should remove the bit about food preparation.

From Religion, I think we should remove:

  • Confucian
  • Germanic Pagan
  • neo-pagan
  • New Ager
  • Orthodox Christian
  • spiritualist
  • Taoist
  • Wiccan
  • witch

From the I believe in... bit, I think we should remove:

  • either spirits or spirituality
  • the zodiac

From the Transport section, from "I travel by...", I think we should remove:

  • by camel
  • by cart
  • by chariot
  • by go-cart
  • by horse
  • either by boat, or by ship
  • by wagon

I think we should remove the "I like to..." bit in Travel.

From Education, I think we should remove from "I teach..."

  • Classical Greek
  • Latin
  • Modern Russian
  • Modern French
  • Modern German

That's enough to discus for now, I think.

Ummm... why are you removing so much? Basic things like "bacon" should be definitely kept... as should "ale" and "mead" (since they're culturally relevant to the original speakers and probably to most modern users). Perhaps we could have appendices or something to host some of the not-so-basic things? As for the idea of merging stuff in the family section, I'm all for it.

This is a proposal, and is up for discussion. To be honest, I was a bit iffy on some of them (such as mead). However, simplification does tend to involve making some hard decisions, in order to have a nicer product at the end. Of course, it's not really much of a disaster if absolutely nothing is done to simplify the phrasebook.

I concede mead and ale, on the basis of their cultural importance. I never really thought of bacon as a basic food...

Feel absolutely encouraged to compile a list of what I suggested should be removed, that you think should be kept. Also, feel free to make some of your own proposals. It's all part of the process...

Also, I think we need to usually have only one translation per entry. For example, I think that in the food section, breakfast should only have one translation (instead of something like four). Gott wisst Gott Wisst's talkpage 06:32, January 9, 2013 (UTC)
